Lotus Europa S Coupe

LOTUS built its reputation in motor racing and its recent road cars have followed founder Colin Chapman’s principles of light weight and racing-style dynamics. But the demand for a more user-friendly sports car than the track-ready Elise and Exige models has led to the development of the Europa. Though based on the Elise platform, the Europa coupe is more user-friendly for daily use, but is still a challenging ownership proposition. With a GM turbocharged 2.0-litre engine developing 147kW/272Nm, it has plenty of power but does not possess the refinement of its German rivals, the Porsche Cayman and BMW Z4 Coupe. > Next Page

Lotus Elise SC Convertible

Lotus has introduced a new boosted version of its Elise roadster. The Elise SC sits at the top of the range at $104,990, well above the $69,990 Elise S and the $94,990 Elise R. The Elise S uses a 100kW Toyota four-cylinder engine, while the Elise R uses a 141kW version. Lotus has pulled out a supercharger for the SC, which boosts the power to 163kW and raises torque to 212Nm. It’s a slightly different system to the Exige S coupe as it doesn’t run an intercooler and delivers its power in a more progressive manner. The Elise SC weighs just 870kg, which enables it to blast from 0-100km/h in just 4.6 seconds - making it the fastest ever Elise.> Next Page

LOTUS ELIS CONVERTIBLE

IT'S big on price and short on equipment levels, but when it comes to speed, handling and looks, the super-light Lotus goes off the scales. Its lightness of being and a gutsy Rover engine provide the motivation while the steering, brakes and handling will flatter the most ham-fisted driver. Such a shame it is beyond the budget of many sporty drivers.

LOTUS 2-ELEVEN ROADSTER

LL Lotus cars are quick, light, handle very well and are not all that practical. The 2-Eleven is an extreme example of Lotus values, sort of like a sociopathic version of the Elise. It doesn’t have a roof, it has no creature comforts whatsoever, is incredibly loud and can’t even be registered in Australia. The price of $127,500 sounds very steep given you can’t even drive it on the road, but the 2-Eleven can blitz some of the most expensive exotic supercars in the world on the racetrack. With a 1.8-litre supercharged engine belting out 188kg and a kerb weight of just 745kg, the 2-Eleven has a power to weight ratio that would rival Formula One cars of the 1960s.

PEUGEOT 308 XTE HDI

PEUGEOT is finally back into premium small-car contention with the 308, even though some may dismiss the hatch as looking too similar to the 307 that preceded it. But all it takes is a few moments inside the completely redesigned interior, or a spell behind the wheel, to realise that the French engineers have gone to great lengths to address the quality, driveability and space efficiency issues that the old car suffered from. In top-line XTE diesel guise, the 308 even makes a convincing alternative to an Audi A3 or Mercedes-Benz B180 CDI.

X-Trail to go diesel

NISSAN will become the first Japanese car-maker to offer a diesel-powered compact SUV in late July, when its second-generation X-Trail will become available with turbo-diesel power. In response to customer demand, Australia's first diesel X-Trail could also be joined by a diesel version of the Dualis, if Nissan Australia can mount a successful business case.
